About Body Contouring Procedures
While every patient is different in terms of problem spots, surgery is most often performed on the following areas: Face, Upper Arms, Chest, Abdomen, Lower Back, Buttocks and Thighs.
Face
The effect of significant weight loss is most noticeable on the face in patients with sagging neck and jowls, and sunken cheeks. A facelift is an effective way to tighten the loose skin, particularly in the neck area. Injecting fat into the cheeks using fat transfer, can add tissue volume. Patients often have both procedures, which result in a younger, firmer appearance.
Upper Arms
The upper arm from the axilla to the elbow is particularly vulnerable to sagging skin after weight loss. Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) reshapes the under portion of the arm. This surgery is often performed with underarm surgery (axilloplasty) to remove the excess skin and fatty tissue that may hang. The result of upper arm surgery is a more toned and proportionate appearance.
Gynecomastia Correction
Gynecomastia is characterized by excess breast tissue and/or saggy skin. Humiliation and insecurity are some of the emotions that experienced by boys and men with enlarged breasts. Liposuction is an excellent means of correction gynecomastia. However, sometimes in severe cases, surgery is performed to remove excess skin.
Abdomen, Lower Back, and Buttocks
The most comprehensive body lift surgery is the belt lipectomy or body lift (circumferential torsoplasty). Addressing the mid-section, surgeons elevate and tighten deep tissue and remove the excess skin and fat around the torso resulting in a re-shaping of the abdomen, hips, back, buttocks and outer thighs. Not everyone will require a full circumferential torsoplasty and may be a candidate for a less extensive standard or extended abdominoplasty.
Thighs
The upper thigh is another problem spot for sagging skin after weight loss. To improve the contours of this area, surgeons may perform a thigh lift (thighplasty) on the area above the knee to the groin. If excess fat is a problem in this area, liposuction can be performed prior to the thigh lift surgery.
